The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has decided not to implement new wastewater discharge regulations for meat and poultry processing facilities, ending a rule proposed in 2024.
The agency reviewed public feedback and determined that current Clean Water Act standards provide adequate environmental protection. The move aligns with broader federal efforts to reduce regulatory costs for the agricultural sector.
Industry groups representing pork, beef, chicken, turkey, and egg producers welcomed the decision, citing concerns that the proposed rules could have forced plant closures, increased operational costs, and raised food prices. Trade associations highlighted that maintaining existing regulations helps protect jobs and supports the viability of small and mid-sized processors.
The Department of Agriculture also supported the decision, emphasising the benefits for processors and the farmers and ranchers they serve. The EPA said the approach balances environmental safeguards with economic considerations in the meat and poultry supply chain.
