Ferrero has successfully met its recyclable packaging goal for the 2023-24 fiscal year, according to its latest sustainability report. The company surpassed its target, achieving 92.1% recyclable packaging, ahead of the 90% goal it set. Ferrero’s broader sustainability objectives include increasing the plastic recycled content in packaging to 12% by 2025 and reducing virgin plastic use by 10% within the same timeframe.
In addition to these achievements, Ferrero has made significant strides in plastic reduction, with a 13% decrease in plastic-to-product ratio and 8.1% of recycled content in its rigid plastic packaging. However, the company notes that gaps remain between recyclable packaging design and real-world recycling capacity, particularly for flexible packaging and certain plastics like PS and EPS. The lack of infrastructure for sorting and recycling these materials remains a major barrier to meeting recyclability goals at scale.
The company’s sustainability efforts also extend to its supply chain, with 97% traceability of cocoa and palm oil, and 94% traceability for hazelnuts. This level of supply chain transparency supports Ferrero’s commitment to responsible sourcing and regulatory compliance, such as the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
In addition to supply chain progress, Ferrero is actively involved in the Guatemala Social Performance project, which seeks to improve human rights policies and grievance mechanisms for palm oil suppliers. This initiative is expected to benefit over 38,000 workers in Guatemala.
Ferrero’s dedication to food safety and quality was demonstrated through more than 45 third-party audits in the 2023-24 fiscal year. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to reducing sodium in its products, with plans to exceed the 90% target for sodium reduction by 2025.
