Food producers unite to pressure US on tougher import measures

Four major US food sectors are joining forces to push for stricter trade enforcement and higher import tariffs, arguing that current trade practices undermine domestic production. The coalition, made up of the American Honey Producers’ Association, Catfish Farmers of America, Crawfish Processors Alliance, Louisiana Farm Bureau Crawfish Committee, and the Southern Shrimp Alliance, says imports of honey, catfish, crawfish, and shrimp are being sold below fair value and are threatening the viability of American producers.

The groups call for a coordinated government response that includes tariffs calibrated to domestic production costs, more vigorous enforcement against transshipped goods and import duty evasion, and enhanced inspection of imported products to address safety violations. They also advocate using national emergency powers and trade laws, specifically the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and Section 232 authority, to frame food security as a strategic concern requiring urgent action.
