Iceland Foods has announced a revised plan to transition to a fully cage-free egg supply chain by June 2027. This decision comes after the retailer’s initial target of 2025 was deemed unfeasible due to supply chain challenges and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
The company’s commitment to phasing out eggs from caged hens dates back to 2016. The new 2027 timeline aims to balance the goal of improved animal welfare with the need to offer affordable food options for UK families. Iceland has already introduced an RSPCA Assured barn egg pilot in 35 stores, marking the first step towards this shift.
As part of the transition, Iceland plans to expand its barn egg offerings across all stores by January 2026. The company, currently the fourth-largest seller of caged eggs in the UK, expects the move to bolster British barn egg production and provide consumers with more sustainable options without sacrificing affordability.
This revised commitment reflects Iceland’s ongoing effort to meet animal welfare standards while maintaining its focus on customer needs during challenging economic times.
