Imported chocolates flagged over labelling and additive risks

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning regarding imported Dubai-style chocolate products that may not comply with UK food safety regulations. Several of these products have entered the UK market without proper allergen labeling or complete ingredient lists, raising concerns for consumers with food allergies and intolerances.

The FSA’s initial survey found that some of the chocolates contain colours and additives not authorised for sale in the UK. The watchdog is now conducting further sampling to determine the extent of the issue and is working with allergy organisations to raise public awareness.

Under UK law, food products must clearly list all ingredients and highlight any of the 14 recognised allergens. Labels must also include the name of the product in English, its weight, best before or use-by date, and the name and address of the responsible UK or EU business, or the importer for goods originating outside the EU.

While most Dubai-style chocolate on UK shelves is compliant and safe, the FSA recommends caution when purchasing from unfamiliar retailers. Consumers and businesses are advised to report any non-compliant products to local authorities.

This development highlights the ongoing need for vigilance across supply chains, particularly as global imports diversify within the UK confectionery sector.
