Mars shifts to 100% recycled plastic jars for major candy brands

Mars has partnered with Berry Global to transition all pantry jars for M&M’S, Skittles, and Starburst to 100% recycled plastic, excluding lids. Now rolling out nationwide, the new packaging replaces jars that previously contained only 15% recycled plastic.

The shift eliminates more than 1,300 metric tons of virgin plastic annually and supports Mars’ goal of making its packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable. The jars in 60-, 81, and 87-ounce sizes use post-consumer resin sourced from curbside recycling.

Berry Global manufactures the jars using certified food-grade recycled plastic, maintaining product quality while advancing sustainability targets. The initiative aligns with broader industry efforts to increase recycled content usage and strengthen recycling infrastructure.
