Self-chilling can technology gains industry interest

A UK startup has developed a self-chilling beverage can that could disrupt the drinks industry by reducing reliance on refrigeration.

Delta H Innovations, founded by former London mixologist James Vyse, has created the Cool Can, which chills a drink from room temperature to ice-cold in under two minutes with a button. The technology requires no electricity, is fully recyclable, and can be applied to various packaging formats, including pouches, cartons, and bottles.

A survey of 100 Nottingham Trent University students found that 81% preferred a self-chilling can over a standard one for on-the-go drinking, and 73% were willing to pay more for the convenience.

The innovation has attracted interest from major brands, including Coca-Cola, Suntory America, Carlsberg, and M&S. A crowdfunding campaign raised £300,000—more than double its target.

Beyond convenience, the technology has sustainability potential, as refrigeration accounts for 17% of global electricity use. Delta H Innovations is now scaling production, aiming to bring its self-chilling can to market.
