Subway to complete U.S. switch to cage-free eggs by November

Subway will source only cage-free eggs across all U.S. locations by 1 November 2025, moving the timeline ahead of its previous target. In Canada, three-quarters of restaurants already serve cage-free eggs, with full adoption expected before year-end.

The transition is part of a broader industry shift among major food chains towards cage-free sourcing. Subway’s North American operations comprise around 22,000 restaurants, making it one of the largest adopters in the market. Other U.S. chains that have completed similar transitions include McDonald’s, Starbucks, Taco Bell, Del Taco, and Shake Shack.

While the North American rollout is near completion, Subway still faces international obligations to meet cage-free commitments in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam by the end of 2025.

The move reflects growing pressure from animal welfare organisations and signals increasing supply chain scrutiny for businesses operating at scale. Chains that have yet to meet cage-free targets in the U.S. include Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s, Bojangles, and Bob Evans, highlighting ongoing gaps in industry-wide compliance.
