Suntory has introduced an advanced beverage technology at Expo 2025 in Osaka with the launch of “Lidris,” a robot capable of creating floating 3D designs in drinks in real time. This innovation allows for an immersive customer experience, as intricate illustrations and patterns appear within the beverage itself while it is served.
The system, which uses food-safe inks and natural pigments, operates via a compact drawing device that injects controlled amounts of coloured liquids into a soft drink base. This creates designs that stay intact for over an hour, offering a unique visual experience. Lidris can also adjust the flavours, colours, and alcohol content of the beverages, catering to a variety of events from private functions to large-scale commercial applications.
Lidris combines robotics, fluid mechanics, and food science in a user-friendly system that can be operated by part-time staff, making it ideal for venues with limited space or staff resources. Its compact design and ease of use mean it can be implemented in smaller cafés, bars, or event settings.
While Lidris currently shines in the hospitality industry, it also has potential applications in sectors that require interactive design demonstrations, such as food science and fluid dynamics. This development highlights the growing intersection of technology, art, and consumer experience in the food and beverage industry.
