US investment fund acquires Australian poultry grower ProTen

US investment firm KKR is acquiring ProTen, one of Australia’s leading broiler chicken growers, from Aware Super. The deal, which is part of KKR’s Asia Pacific Infrastructure Investors II fund, aims to strengthen ProTen’s growth trajectory and operational capabilities within the Australian poultry supply chain.

ProTen, established in 2001, operates over 700 poultry sheds across more than 60 farms, primarily in key agricultural regions across Australia. The company has been owned by the Australian superannuation fund, Aware Super, since 2018. During this time, Aware Super invested significantly in ProTen, enhancing its infrastructure and scaling its operations.

KKR’s investment reflects confidence in ProTen’s strong customer relationships and its capacity to meet the growing demand for sustainable protein in Australia. The firm plans to utilise its global network and operational expertise to further support ProTen’s expansion. ProTen will continue to focus on its core mission of supporting Australia’s poultry industry.
