Fresh team of apprentices make their mark at MM Packaging Deeside

MM Packaging Deeside has welcomed seven new apprentices to the business, underlying its commitment to training and development. The new intake will work in manufacturing, purchasing, design and origination.

The latest group underlines MM Packaging’s commitment to its apprenticeship programme, which is run in association with print industry body the BPIF, along with bespoke purchasing and design qualifications. The cartonboard business offers a three-year apprenticeship across the departments. It is an NVQ qualification up to Level Three and incorporates first aid, fire marshal and IOSH Managing Safely training.

Dave Whitworth, operations director at MM Packaging, said: “The new apprentices are the latest success story for our business. The contribution they are making is invaluable to the site. In this instance, we have been able to add apprentices to our purchasing, design and origination departments, demonstrating that talented people can find opportunities away from the manufacturing shop floor.”

MM Packaging’s strategy aligns with the current drive and urgent need to develop new talent. Many in the UK’s packaging workforce arrived into the industry by accident with the sector almost hidden to many. However, there are opportunities to flourish throughout the packaging supply chain.

“Those who do fall into packaging find that it’s a great industry to work in – one that provides a varied career and many stay in it for life,” added Dave Whitworth. “We need to train talented people to futureproof our business. It’s not just good for us but also provides a wide range of valuable skills for apprentices.

“It’s also the perfect time to join with this part of the industry expanding. The need for fibre-based packaging continues to grow, with more brand owners looking to reduce their reliance on plastic.”

MM Packaging remains on the lookout for apprentices across all its departments with a keen eye on the next generation of skilled workers.

Julian Freeman, MM Packaging Deeside managing director, said: “We’re delighted with the start our new intake of apprentices have made. They’ve contributed to the success of the business and further strengthens our workforce.

“Developing talent is a key strategy for MM Packaging and our track record demonstrates that we can provide apprentices with long and successful careers. Recruitment is a challenge for many firms in the manufacturing sector but with a solid apprenticeship programme, we aim to attract the brightest and the best people to our business.

“We are grateful to the BPIF and training partners for their support and giving our apprentices an excellent introduction to this fast-paced and innovative industry.”
